Numerical EFIT simulations for ultrasonic NDT applications – Past, present and future

At the Fraunhofer IKTS site in Dresden-Klotzsche our focus is on developing advanced non-destructive testing solutions for ceramics and many other materials.

We are constantly working on new solutions. We would like to present some of these to you in our new NDT4Industry online seminar series.

Numerical EFIT simulations for ultrasonic NDT applications – Past, present and future
with Dr. Frank Schubert (Fraunhofer IKTS, Group Manager of Ultrasonic Sensors and Methods)

April 28, 2021, 3:00 p.m. CEST

In the last two decades the role of numerical simulations in ultrasonic NDT changed from a pure preplanning tool to an active instrument for simulation-based optimization of transducers and ultrasonic set-ups during development. In the future we will see an even more active role of numerical simulations being directly embedded in the NDT system itself. This paradigm shift is strongly driven by modern industry 4.0 and machine learning applications where experimental and numerical results are merged for a better system performance, superior defect characterization and for closing gaps in incomplete data sets used for deep learning techniques.

Dr. Frank Schubert presents different NDT applications in which Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique (EFIT) simulations played an important role during development. The corresponding project leaders explain the goals of their projects and how EFIT simulations helped to improve the NDT system.
