Brief overview

Background

The German government’s new High-Tech Strategy aims to combine the strengths of science and industry. In recent years, research institutions, universities, companies and other players have organized themselves into successful regional and national clusters and networks. However, complex research questions and innovation topics are increasingly being tackled with international partners all over the world. In the future, global competitiveness will depend decisively on cross-sector and interdisciplinary cooperation with internationally outstanding innovation regions. This measure is intended to support outstanding clusters and networks in Germany in developing and intensifying strategic cooperation with leading European and international innovation regions with complementary competencies and in transforming it into concrete, viable cooperation projects.

Objectives and Procedure

The project is dedicated to two challenges in the field of printed, flexible, organic electronics. Intelligent OLED-OPV based systems will make interactive advertising applications possible. For the development of the planned demonstrator the existing technologies must be further developed and combined. In a second development strand, electronically functionalized 2D films will be transformed into plastic 3D objects by a thermal forming process. At the end of the project it will be possible to produce simple demonstrators in a continuous process in a demonstration plant. A part of the technologies will be researched in cooperation with partners from England and the partner cluster in Yonezawa, Japan and coordinated by Organic Electronics Saxony (OES).

News

20/21 March 2018 — Kick-off to the Origami Project
The Origami project can start. Due to the size of the project with a total of 12 partners on the German side alone, two separate kick-off meetings were held for the two subprojects IonT and F2E. In particular, this strengthened the exchange of content between the partners and defined the first steps and deliverables in the respective subprojects.
IonT subproject:

  • Target parameters for the planned syntheses by SYNTHON Chemicals
  • Agreements with Fraunhofer IWS on barrier measurements with regard to the extension of the HiBarSens system
  • Exchange between Inuru and IAPP to perform OLED simulations
  • Agreements between OES and Inuru to prepare the market study for OLEDs in packaging
  • Planning of the field study on the application of organic solar cells as energy supply for OLEDs in packages

F2E subproject:

  • Discussion on the planned demonstrators
  • Determination of target elements for the demonstrator (possibility of interaction, integration of light)
  • „Extreme Deformation“ defined as the central technological element
  • Determination of suitable materials
  • Discussion about design

24 – 27 September 2018 — International Project Week in Dresden
The International Project Week offered the project partners ample opportunity for mutual exchange at the international project meeting including the cultural side event, a company tour to Adenso, Sempa, Plastic Logic and Creaphys as well as numerous bilateral meetings. December 2018 — Admission of the Adenso spin-off adSphere as an associated partner
After agreement with all project partners and the project management agency, the newly founded adSphere GmbH was accepted as an associated partner in the consortium. As a subsidiary of Adenso GmbH, adSphere will participate in the planning and implementation of the demonstrator activities in the F2E subproject.

15 January 2019 — Project meeting Origami
As described in the work plan, the second annual project meeting was carried out as a joint innovation meeting between the two subprojects IonT and F2E. A part of the consortium presented its own work and competences in a common thematic part. Subsequently, the detailed discussions were continued separately. The innovation project meetings serve to further link the partners and present the project results in order to exploit the synergies between the two subprojects in terms of content.

28 January – 01 February 2019 — International Project Week in Tokyo
For further coordination between the German and Japanese partners, an international project meeting was held in Tokyo on 29 January as part of the subsequent Nanotech Fair. Information about the events during this week can be found here.

23 – 27 September 2019 — International Project Week in Dresden
Following the successful tradition of the previous year, we held another International Project Week in Dresden, offering the project partners opportunies to discuss about the project status as well as next steps. As a cultural side event, we visited the Transparent Factory in Dresden and had a look at the fabrication of the Volkswagen e-Golf. Furthermore, we introduced further members of the OES cluster by visiting Fraunhofer ENAS, TU Chemnitz and 3D-Micromac in Chemnitz. You will find information here.
