CleanScreen – With UV-C inactivation of pathogens to sterile touchscreens

At frequently used vending machines, such as ticket machines, the input screens are not cleaned after use. You can quickly catch a few germs, bacteria or viruses there. The „CleanScreen“ project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) now aims to find a remedy. Together with partners, Fraunhofer FEP is developing an automated solution for the continuous cleaning of touch displays on public vending machines. The project was developed as part of the „CleanHand“ innovation network.

The technology behind the project is based on treatment with UV-C light, which inactivates 99.99% of pathogens. Due to its many years of experience in the field of inactivating germs, Fraunhofer FEP acts as an interface between biology and technology by testing the effectiveness of the technology and, if necessary, deriving the need for further development.

In addition to this project, the Fraunhofer FEP’s „Medical and Biotechnological Applications“ department is also working on the currently highly explosive topic of hygienisation. Starting with surface hygienisation through UV-activatable coatings or surface functionalisation through electron beam grafting of antiviral humic substances on textiles, through to mobile disinfection technologies for automated surface disinfection in areas of public life.
